![]() ![]() Since computer players never make a mistake laying tracks, they will wipe the floor with you for the first few times. ![]() Multi-player is new for me, and so far I felt I'm not up to it, so I only played against the computer. Now couple incorrectly connected double-tracks with an AI that has gone off the deep end, and you end up with a very, very unpleasant - if not frustrating - gaming experience. Unfortunately, the way RR implements the UI for double-laying is so incredibly stupidly designed, that you'd end up laying unconnected (but connected-looking) tracks more often than not. The problem here is of course that a circular track is one of the most efficient designs for many problems.Īnother problem is with track laying - very soon after you start your first little route, you'll need to double-lay tracks to avoid dead-locks. The AI will invariably start routing your trains to never-never-land, running a LA-San Diego train through Utah, completely killing any profit, and - if you don't detect this soon enough - may even bankrupt your RR company (remember - a RR AND business simulator.). Never, ever, in a game should you design your track with a loop in it. The biggest problem, though, is AI, or more specifically, train routing AI. The interface is a typical windows port that takes getting used to (to be honest though, the same was true for Railroad Tycoon). The music is ok, and can be turned off (not eveyone likes period-realistic music, and a banyo positively grates on my nerves). I've (already) spent a lot of time playing it, and it is definitely worth it if you, for exaple, compare that to what you'd get out of a cinema ticket. I'm not exactly disappointed - but neither am I ecstatic. Curiosity got the better of me, and I purchased it. ![]() ![]() ![]() Through various lineup shifts over the decades, the act's core duo is comprised of Bill Leeb (vocals, synthesizers) and Rhys Fulber (synthesizers, samplers). They remained active with studio efforts like 2021's Mechanical Soul. before turning their attention to video game soundtracks on AirMech (2012) and WarMech (2018). They repeated the feat in 2010 with Improvised. After returning focus to electronic, techno-oriented beats, FLA entered the 21st century with a trio of releases that landed the group on the Billboard charts for the first time with 2006's Artificial Soldier. As the genre incorporated more metal influences, so did the band, who injected jagged guitar riffs and aggressive sampling on 1994's Millennium. The addition of EBM dance beats followed, heard on releases such as 1989's Gashed Senses & Crossfire and 1992's Tactical Neural Implant. Initially, FLA dealt with the dark synth atmospherics heard on their official debut, 1987's The Initial Command. Side projects include: Conjure One, Delerium, Pro-Tech, Synaesthesia, Will, Intermix, Noise Unit, Equinox, Cyberaktif and Mutual Mortuary.Front Line Assembly Language available : englishĪs genre progenitors pushing beat-driven industrial, corrosive metal, and electronic body music in the late '80s and early '90s, Front Line Assembly helped formulate this hybrid style before acts like nine inch nails carried it into the mainstream. As if all of those factors weren't enough, two guest vocalists appear on Artificial Soldier – Eskil Simonsson from Covenant (on “The Storm”) and Jean-Luc De Meyer from Front 242 (on “Future Fail”)! Heavy pounding beats, atmospheric strings, percolating melodies, dynamic synths and Bill Leeb's trademark vocals couldn't be fused together any tighter if you tried to do it at an atomic level. Just release in June 2006 the newly re-formed line-up managed to create a release that not only lives up to the expectations of Front Line Assembly fans, but surpasses them. The trio, with new members Jeremy Inkel and Adrian White, began work on Artificial Soldier in early 2005, and it was time well spent. 'Maniacal' is good old-fashioned FLA bought up to date whilst B-side 'Anti' shows that messers Leeb and Fulber can still produce stark and dark Industrial.Īnd now for the first time ever Bill Leeb, Rhys Fulber, and Chris Peterson have joined ranks to create arguably the best Front Line Assembly release that the electronic industrial community has seen in over a decade. Once again re-united as FLA, Bill And Rhys released a killer single 'Maniacal' (2003) as a precursor to the new album 'Civilization' (2004) and the sighs of relief amongst FLA fans were audible across the globe. Sticking with a heavy dose of synth-pop trance and throbbing melodies,Leeb and Peterson issued Epitaph in fall 2001. A best-of/remix compilation, Monument, was released the same year, as well as Re-Wind, a re-mix collection of material from Flavour of the Weak. Fulber departed the lineup by 1997, while his replacement Chris Peterson debuted with 1998's Flavour of the Weak. By 1994, the sound evolved yet again, with the album Millennium displaying a newfound reliance on guitars both the title track and "This Faith" scored as club hits. After Balch departed Front Line Assembly in 1990, Fulber stepped in as a full partner the streamlined duo soon released the electro-styled album Caustic Grip, while 1992's Tactical Neural Implant found the group's music moving in a more hard-edged disco direction. In 1989, the group returned with the album Gashed Senses & Crossfire, which contained the dance-flavored singles "Digital Tension Dementia" and "No Limit." A European tour in support of the record yielded a live album - titled simply, Live - that was released and deleted on the same day in a limited edition of 4,000 pressings. ![]() Later in 1988, Corrosion was reissued, along with a subsequent mini-album titled Disorder and a number of exclusive bonus tracks, as Convergence. After a handful of compilation appearances and cassette-only releases, Front Line Assembly issued its first three full-length efforts - The Initial Command, State of Mind, and Corrosion - on a monthly basis between December 1987 and February 1988. After working in the mid-'80s under the pseudonym Wilhelm Schroeder with Skinny Puppy, the Austrian-born Leeb formed the industrial/ebm-based Front Line Assembly in 1986 with Fulber - who initially joined on as a studio assistant - and synth player Michael Balch. Front Line Assembly is one of the best-known of the various electronic music projects undertaken by the prolific Vancouver-based duo of Bill Leeb (vocals, synthesizers) and Rhys Fulber (synthesizers and samplers). ![]() ![]() ![]() Thunderblast's painted-on Autobot sigil ends up on the sole of his left foot in robot mode. This is the only version of this mold whose head is not painted to match the colors of the main body, thus revealing that the head is part of a different mold sprue otherwise not used by this Mini-Con.As the image caption alludes to, the story of Thunderblast and Sky Lynx's respect for each other as enemies is inspired by the then-recent-ish movie Enemy at the Gates. I think he referred to it as such because he would call other games like Donkey Kong, Pac-Man and Wolfenstein 3D "combat video games", but a more apt terminology would be "graphic adventure game" (Like Police Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, race Memory, Hotel Dusk and Phoenix Wright). Not being a gamer, Ellison would describe I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream (the game) as a "strategy game". This unfortunately made these versions of the game unbeatable, as Nimdok's presence and items are needed to complete the final section and the game code was not modified to accommodate this. The game was censored in both France and Germany, removing Nimdok's quest and censoring references to Nazis and the Holocaust. Never forget! And this game is intended to offend people, to annoy people to shock and upset people. I don't care if it's in comic books, or computer games or if people write it in graffiti on the wall. "I use the trope of the Holocaust frequently in my work and when someone says 'well, it's gonna trivialize the Holocaust because it's in a game'. People say 'well you only right to shock.' Duuh! Yeah, okay! That is a noble endeavor! To shock! " "I put things in everything I do, that are intended to rattle the cage, to stir the soup. ![]() Ellison was accused of being insensitive for making references to Holocaust and Nazi Germany.Įllison had this to say during promotional videos that were recording during the pre-release hype: This game proved that you can use interactive media to touch upon difficult subjects and do so in an artistic way. Actually, it looks like somehow the game made it to store shelves unrated: there doesn't seem to be any ESRB data on the game. In fact, I don’t know how in the hell it got by without an “M” rating. I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream's script challenged the video game medium of the time by presenting Ellison's classic bleak scenario and also by telling a terrifying tale the deals with mature themes (rape, genocide, the Holocaust, World War III, the final destruction of humanity) in a respectful way. Ellison needed those things to happen, and they do! In the game, AM's abilities are said to be manipulations of "morphogenic fields" which is silly technobabble that sounds like it could be straight out of an episode of Star Trek but gives AM's special skills a context more rooted in science fiction than science fantasy. None of his being able to create horrible monsters, probing people's minds or matter teleportation is truly explained. In the short story, AM can do all kinds of things because the plot dictates it it shows off his might. Establishing Ted as a con artist, we now have further clues as to why he's so erratic and paranoid in the source.īeyond that, further light is shed on AM's powers. Gorrister must relive the death of his wife. Benny is revealed to be a warmongering military man. Nimdock is revealed to be a former Nazi scientist with a heart full of regret. The main 5 characters all have backstories that flesh out and all of them have deep, dark fears which AM forces them to face. I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream (the game) shares the premise, setting, and characters of the original novella, but Ellison and Sears make a new storyline that greatly elaborates on everything. AM is a mischief maker and is constantly setting our heroes up to fail Beyond that, every quest is meant to be appropriately ironic in some way and play into each character's deepest fear or fatal flaw. After over a century of nearly non-stop torture, AM tells our 5 lead characters that he is going to send them each on a personal quest and if they pass their trial, he'll free them. He is clearly relishing the opportunity to play the character he created decades prior. AM doesn't actually talk very much in the source material, and in some audio book readings, Ellison initially gave him a monotone robot voice, but in the game, he goes full-on Ellison The Character. The second to last game for Cyberdreams and one of the last titles for The Dreamer’s Guild, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream opens up with Ellison giving a remarkable performance as AM (the evil Godlike supercomputer), reciting a famous bit of text from the novella. ![]() ![]() ![]() Most of Flow Free is that way as well.īut sometimes, Flow Free will throw in a puzzle that has squigglies all over it! Those curve balls are the only type of level that gave me pause. There are no squigglies or unnecessary knots. Every line is tightly packed into the grid. In Bridges, everything is placed in the optimal way. The level structure of Flow Free is different of that than Bridges. I quickly beat the standard levels and then started to dive into the other packs. I was annoyed with Flow Free: Bridges and so I downloaded Flow Free and bought all of the DLC. And that's frustrating! I wanted "Hard" to actually mean something! The more you do it, the better you become, so when there are larger grids they aren't necessarily harder, they are just about the same. Once you fill in the pipes that are obvious, the rest of the paths become clear. That means that in every level, there are assumptions that have to be true. ![]() The problem with the game is that the pipes have to fill the entire square. Sometimes, I would have to put the game down for a couple of days before loading it back up to solve a single puzzle. Train Yard puzzles get progressively harder. I never felt this way about Train Yard, which presents similar gameplay to Flow Free: Bridges. Maybe this game is not about being a puzzle at all, instead it's a distraction. The game was so easy, in fact, that I thought that either (a) I was some sort of genius or (b) the appeal of the game is how simple it is. I finished all 300 levels perfectly in a single day - while traveling and doing work. Each page, I was presented with a variation of the puzzle and each one was solved in mere seconds. It was as if I was reading a book, not playing a game. I kept thinking the game would get harder, but it didn't. The bright colors on the black background look awesome.įlow Free: Bridges was not a challenge. You cannot mistake Flow Free for any other game. I could easily see why people seem to love the game and why my coworker would be commenting on it. The interface is great once you're inside the game and it's pretty. I have had few, if any, clumsy finger mistakes and even when I did, there is an undo button when you stray too far from an acceptable path (in other words, you disrupt one path with another). The game is very responsive to the player's touch. Let me start with a major positive-Flow Free: Bridges (and Flow Free) are beautifully done. I obsessed over the Cut the Rope puzzles until I finished all of those (and the "Experiments" pack). I was pretty happy with the prospect of a new puzzle game. This variant by the game company included a single "bridge" in the puzzle. Instead, I started with Flow Free: Bridges. And normally, iPhone games are only one dollar, so I can afford to make a mistake every now and then. I understand the "try before you buy" model, but I trust reviews enough to know what I'm going to like. I don't like looking at ads and I can be skeptical about DLC. ![]() I have a rule about free games, which is that I mainly don't play them. Each puzzle has a single solution (I presume some of the larger grids have a couple of options, but not many), and the game is elegantly displayed with bright colors on a black background. The game has a simple concept - connect like-colored nodes and fill the entire grid without intersecting. It didn't take long to discover what she was talking about.įlow Free is a free (ad-supported / DLC-supported) puzzle application for touchscreen phones (it looks like the game is available on all of the major platforms). Once you have the basics down, you can start to experiment with different panel layouts and sizes to see what works best for your story. Finding the right balance is essential to creating an effective comic book panel. On the other hand, not enough text can make the panel feel empty. Too much text can be overwhelming for the reader and make it difficult to follow the story. When creating your panels, you also want to take into consideration the amount of text you include in each one. You want to avoid using too many panels that are the same size and shape as this can make the story feel static. This can be achieved by using a variety of panel layouts and sizes. One of the most important things to remember when creating a comic book is that the panels should flow together seamlessly. Each panel should advance the story forward and provide new information to the reader. They provide the reader with a visual representation of the action taking place in the story. The first thing you need to know about comic book panels is that they are a storytelling device. How to Use Comic Book Panels to Create a Story ![]() There is no one correct way to do it – the best thing to do is an experiment and see what works best for you and your story. You can mix and match these different types of comic book panels to create a unique comic book page. Page panel: A page-sized panel, takes the place of the page itself, while all of the other panels are superimposed over it.įull-width Panel: A panel that takes up the entire width of the page Inset Panel: An inset panel is when one panel is within a larger panel.īroken Panel: A broken panel is when an image within a panel extends beyond the border into the gutter or adjacent panel Vertical Panel: A vertical panel is a tall and skinny rectangle, often used to show simultaneous events like several character reactions side by side. Horizontal Panel: A horizontal panel is a long and rectangular, often used to show a landscape. Splash: A splash panel is a full-page panel, usually used for a dramatic entrance or exit. Puzzle or jigsaw: A puzzle or jigsaw panel is where the image is broken into pieces, often used for action scenes. Irregular panel: An irregular panel is where one or more of the sides are not straight or parallel, creating a row or column on panels with differently sized panels, often used to show movement or to make a particular image stand out.ĭiagonal: A diagonal panel is where the panel is set at an angle, often used for the same purpose as an irregular panel. Strict (regular): A strict or regular panel is a rectangular or square image that doesn’t overlap with the other panels. Overlapping Panels: An overlapping panel is when one image is slightly visible in the next panel. When designing your own comic book pages, it’s important to keep in mind the different types of panels available to you and to experiment with different panel layouts to see what works best for your story. When used effectively, multiple panels can create a rhythm and pace that enhances the reading experience, and can also be used to highlight key scenes and moments. Comic panels are an essential element of the comic book page, providing both structure and style to the story. ![]() ![]() ![]() Therapists (and trained caregivers) can use it to provide targeted tactile cues within the oral cavity to teach tongue elevation, tongue lateralization, lip closure, rotary chewing, and much more.
